Captain D's Tartar Sauce Recipe

I have always been a fan of seafood, and one of my favorite accompaniments to fried fish is tartar sauce. There’s just something about that creamy, tangy sauce that takes a simple fish dish to a whole new level.

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Plastic wrap (for covering)
  • Refrigerator

Ingredients

  • 2 tsp finely chopped dill weed
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice freshly squeezed
  • salt to taste, if necessary
  • 1 tablespoon minced onion
  • 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon dijon mustard
  • 2-3 tbsp finely chopped dill pickle
  • 1 cup Duke’s mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

Instructions

  • Begin by gathering all the necessary ingredients in a mixing bowl. Add the mayonnaise, freshly squeezed lemon juice, finely chopped dill pickle, minced onion, sugar, finely chopped dill weed, black pepper, and dijon mustard into the bowl. Ensure that each ingredient is evenly distributed.
  • Once all the ingredients are combined, taste the tartar sauce. Depending on your preference, you may need to adjust the seasoning. If it needs more tanginess, add a splash more lemon juice. For added depth of flavor, consider adjusting the amount of black pepper or dijon mustard.
  • Cover the mixing bowl with plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator. Let the tartar sauce rest for at least an hour before serving. This resting period allows the flavors to meld together and develop fully.
  • After the resting period, give the tartar sauce another taste test. Ensure that the flavors have blended well and adjust the seasoning if necessary. If it's too thick, you can thin it out with a little more lemon juice or a splash of water.
  • Once satisfied with the flavor, your homemade Captain D's-inspired tartar sauce is ready to serve. Use it as a dipping sauce for seafood dishes like fish and chips, shrimp, or crab cakes. Alternatively, spread it on sandwiches or burgers for an extra burst of flavor. Enjoy your delicious tartar sauce creation!

Notes

  • To enhance the flavor of the sauce, consider using fresh dill and a high-quality mayonnaise.
  • For a more pronounced tanginess, increase the amount of lemon juice.
  • If you prefer a chunkier texture, leave the dill pickle pieces slightly larger in size.
  • This sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
  • Feel free to experiment with additional ingredients such as capers or horseradish for a unique twist on the classic recipe.
