- 3 sesame-seed burger buns
- 6 slices of mild cheddar cheese
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 medium onion diced
- 1 green bell pepper chopped into bite-sized pieces
- 4 medium-sized cremini mushrooms sliced
- 1 large heirloom tomato sliced
- 3 large baby romaine lettuce leaves
- 2 tbsp creamy mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp tangy ketchup
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1/2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
Step 1: Prepare the Vegetables
Start by preparing your vegetables. Dice the onion, chop the bell pepper, and slice the mushrooms. Be sure to wash the heirloom tomato and cut it into thick slices. Clean those romaine leaves as well.
Step 2: Sauté the Veggies
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat. Toss in the diced onion first, allowing it to soften for about two minutes.
Once it starts to become translucent, add in the bell pepper and mushrooms. Cook them for an additional five minutes until they’re tender and lightly browned. The aroma will fill the kitchen. Your nose will thank you!
Step 3: Toast the Buns
As the veggies cook, preheat your oven or a toaster oven to about 350°F (175°C). Slice your sesame seed buns in half and place them on a baking sheet. When the oven is ready, toast the buns for about 5 minutes or until they’re golden brown.
Step 4: Assemble the Sandwich
Step 5: Add the Rest of the Ingredients
Stack those slices of cheddar cheese on top of the veggies. Then, add your slices of heirloom tomato and the romaine leaves. Finally, drizzle ketchup and a touch of Dijon mustard over everything. Finish with the top bun.
- Use Fresh Ingredients: Always opt for the freshest veggies. The quality of your sandwich significantly improves with fresh produce.
- Don’t Rush the Sauté: Let the vegetables caramelize slightly. This increases their sweetness and deepens the flavor.
- Experiment with Cheese: If you want an extra kick, try pepper jack instead of mild cheddar for a spicy twist.
- Toast to Perfection: Don’t skip toasting the buns; it’s essential for a good crunch.
- Make It Your Own: Feel free to add or substitute your favorite vegetables. Spinach, avocados, or even roasted red peppers can add different flavors.
