Ann Jones
I remember my first encounter with the In-N-Out grilled cheese. It was a sun-drenched afternoon in California, and I was on a quest for comfort food that wouldn’t weigh me down.

Equipment

  • pull out only the written equipment from the steps

Ingredients

  • 1 large juicy beefsteak tomato
  • 1 large sweet onion
  • 1/2 head of crisp Iceberg lettuce
  • A handful of fresh arugula
  • 4 slices of creamy American cheese
  • Soft burger buns
  • At least 4 pickle slices per sandwich
  • 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter
  • 2 teaspoons of Dijon mustard
  • Special sauce

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Your Ingredients

  • Begin by slicing your tomato and onion evenly. You want each slice to be manageable. Next, wash your lettuce and arugula, patting them dry with a towel. This ensures the sandwich doesn’t get soggy later.

Step 2: Assemble Your Sandwich

  • Grab your soft burger bun and lay down a slice of cheese. Next, layer on the veggies! Start with lettuce, followed by the juicy tomato, and then your slick onions. Add a handful of arugula for that peppery edge.
  • Place another slice of cheese on top of the vegetables, and seal it with the other half of the bun. So far, so delicious!

Step 3: Butter the Outside

  • Apply butter generously on the outside of both sandwich halves. This is your golden moment. Butter creates a crispy crust that enhances the sandwich’s overall appeal.

Step 4: Get Cooking

  • Heat a frying pan over medium heat. Once the pan is nice and warm, place your sandwich on it. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on one side. Keep an eye on it—burnt sandwiches? No thanks!

Step 5: Flip and Continue

  • Carefully flip your sandwich using a spatula. Press down gently for even cooking. Cook for another 3-4 minutes until it’s golden brown and the cheese is perfectly melted.

Step 6: Add Your Pickles and Special Sauce

  • Once you’ve reached peak crispiness, remove the sandwich from the pan. Slather on some special sauce and add your pickles. Slice it in half to reveal the melty goodness and get ready for a feast!

Notes

  • Choose the Right Cheese: Go for the American cheese slices—they melt wonderfully.
  • Use Fresh Ingredients: Fresh produce makes all the difference. It brings the sandwich to life!
  • Control the Heat: Keep the heat moderate. Too high, and you’ll end up with burnt bread and unmelted cheese.
  • Experiment with Spreads: Try mixing it up with different spreads like avocado or hummus for an unexpected twist.
  • Use a Panini Press: If you have one, it makes for a great cooking method. You’ll achieve even cooking and that wonderful grill mark aesthetic.
